Tassie Time

Hobart here we come. Judging by the name you’d expect it to be a place full of characters from Lord of the Rings. It’s actually a port town set around the Derwent River and feed on to the Indian Ocean – which I didn’t know.

Downtown Hobart is OK, not spectacular, but walk just outside and you can see why people rave about it. Almost every house is elevated on hillsides and looks over the bay “offering superb views over the sound” (that’s me training to become an estate agent).

The best way up a mountain? Take the bus. We took the nr 36 to the top of Mount Nelson and spent the next few hours walking through bush and beach to get us back. A real must for faintly active people like ourselves.

On the “did you know side” of things, Errol Flynn was born just outside Hobart – probably where he trained as pirate
